The project partners were welcomed by Christian Hansmann, PhD (Head of Division) and Prof. Johannes Konnerth, PhD (Institute of Wood Technology and Renewable Resources, BOKU University). For two days, the next steps for the realisation of concrete activities in the regions and the finalisation of the “Action Plan” were discussed.

During the activities in the regions, the individual partners work together with companies on site to implement various “design thinking approaches” on the topics of “advanced materials”, “bio-based materials” and “sustainable materials”. In the so-called demo plans, the implementing partners presented Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Slovenia, Ukraine and Hungary. Companies in these regions will soon be invited to participate via the project website, the project LinkedIn channel and the partners’ social media channels and websites. As so-called Knowledge Partners, Bayern Innovativ (Germany) and Wood K plus (Austria) are involved in the activities and also forward invitations and requirements to their respective networks.

To ensure that the supra-regional exchange remains guaranteed despite the regional actions and that the partners can continue to learn from each other, the exchange at partner level continues to take place in parallel in the thematic groups. In this way, the individual partners receive feedback on the various methods and content, which in turn flows back into the organisations, networks and clusters and further strengthens the development of the knowledge communities. Bayern Innovativ is leading the “Advanced Materials” thematic group, with Barbara Giehmann presenting the transnational rollout plan for this area and Kristijan Radikovič (National Institute of Chemistry) and Lea Ranacher (Wood K plus) presenting the “Sustainable Materials” and “Bio-based Materials” thematic groups. The focus here was on the challenges in the Danube Region and possible solutions. A publication is planned once the project has been implemented.

A central point in the project is also the so-called action plan. In all Interreg projects, it is important to reflect results and recommendations back to political stakeholders. In this way, needs and challenges can be passed on and taken into account when planning future measures. Among other things, the further harmonisation of living conditions and securing the European location should be promoted at European level. The consortium is currently finalising the action plan and will publish it in the near future.

On the second day, Christian Hansmann gave a keynote speech with insights into “Trends and visions in wood material technologies” and gave the partners a tour of the Wood K plus laboratories at the Tulln site. In addition to discussions on the organisation of the ongoing project, workshops with active discussions on the concretisation of future topics in the knowledge communities in the individual regions took place afterwards.
