GreenGEO - GreenGeometry - complex geometries made from natural fibers
Project goals & contents:
Wood K plus is one of the leading research institutions in the field of wood and renewable raw materials in Europe. By solving the associated research questions at the interface between science and industry, Wood K plus makes a significant contribution to enabling resource-efficient management in the circular bioeconomy. Wood K plus aims to expand its expertise with the GreenGeo project as a next step in the development of bio-based materials. The project aims to leverage combined forming technologies to enable the use of renewable raw materials—specifically cellulose‑based fibers—in high‑quality applications. The goal is to support the efficient production of complex geometries while ensuring full recyclability and sustainability. More specifically, the project encompasses the entire process chain: from fiber processing and characterisation to shaping technologies such as pulp molding and binder jetting, all the way to the digital capture of manufacturing data and the modelling of product properties.
GREENGEO aims to make renewable raw materials (NAWAROs, cellulose-based fibers) suitable for use in high‑quality applications through combined forming technologies. The objective is to enable the efficient production of complex geometries while maintaining recyclability and sustainability. The project scope covers the entire process chain—from fiber preparation and characterisation to forming via pulp molding and binder jetting technology (BJT), as well as the digital recording of manufacturing data and the modelling of product properties. This addresses the following research questions and aspects:
- Development of bio‑based materials from renewable raw materials for pulp molding, BJT forming and their processing into high‑quality, complex geometries.
- Optimisation of both forming processes to allow material reuse across multiple recycling cycles for repeated applications.
- Strengthening of research capabilities at the St. Veit/Glan site, contributing to Austria’s Research, Technology and Innovation Strategy and supporting the regional agenda for a green transformation.
