Project description and aim:

Within the wood industry, a significant part of the processing processes, from roundwood processing to surface refinement, is based on mechanical disintegration. Increasing demands on process and resource efficiency lead to the fact that, in addition to the actual product, the resulting chips must have certain properties in order to be subsequently used as a raw material for the wood-based industry (chipboard, OSB, MDF, ...). However, due to the complexity of the material and the high speeds, the understanding of separation processes is still deficient. This lack of basic knowledge leads again to problems concerning a knowledge-based development of new tools as well as of process optimization measures. A further challenge arises from the fact that tools and processes are primarily designed for the processing of conifers. Due to climatic changes and the resulting conversion of the forest, however, an increased supply for hardwood is already to be expected. Thus, the wood industry and the wood processing industry are faced with the great challenge of counteracting changing raw materials in good time.


The goal of the HARDIS project is therefore to create the foundations for the machining of hardwood. In the course of the project, a new measuring method and measuring equipment will be developed to investigate cutting forces and deformation behavior at cutting speeds of up to 100 m/s. These data again provide the basis for the development of an FEM model. By combining the measured data, simulation using FEM and investigation of the failure mechanisms, a holistic understanding of the machining process will be an important result and the cutting process should be described by means of physically determined models.


Through cross-border cooperation and an interdisciplinary approach the project will help to raise the iterative process of technology development to a knowledge-based level.
